![]() If your exhaust pipe has a hole or a leak, your engine performance will be affected. I was hoping someone could validate this or offer some way of testing this theory without the need for removing the manifolds as from what ive gathered its a timely job and time being a little short at the moment i really hoped i could get some guidance. Hereof, will hole in exhaust affect performance Your engine performance requires that all components in the car operate at optimum capacity. Ive read on a couple of different forums, i cant find them for some reason to link here, that the 323i e36 was prone to exhaust manifold leaks and when this happens it can cause a ticking sound which is often mistaken for lifters. ![]() Ive tried using winns lifter cleaner thinking something may be clogged up and changed the oil correctly twice since ive owned the vehicle ive also looked into the vanos and disa units which appear to be running normal with now strange noises. Pretty simple repair (as long as you dont bust the bolts that attach your manifold to the cat) Just unbolt cat from manifold and you may have to loosen the cats/y pipe from the muffler. You can especially hear these sounds upon higher acceleration. An exhaust manifold leak can cause burned exhaust valves, improper fuel trim as the leak introduces extra oxygen that is picked up by the oxygen sensor, and slow warm-up time which also causes high fuel consumption, which will also cause your catalytic converter to fail prematurely, and the exhaust fumes can easily. In the case of a broken exhaust system, the sound gets noticeably loud. As said earlier, some exhaust leaks can make a vehicle sound like a proper racecar. The ticking noise is definitely coming from the drivers side as can be heard when driving close to buildings or tight lanes and can be heard quite clearly with the window down at about 2500 rpm and is especially noticeable when off the accelerator or engine braking. Also, it is better to spot more than two exhaust leak symptoms before you finally conclude that you need a new exhaust. In short ive had this really annoying ticking sound coming from the engine area for the llast 6 months which since some slightly warmer weather ( not sure if this is related) has gotten slightly worse. Im after a bit of advice before i start needlessly dismantling my car ![]()
